Sorry for the absence...I have been watching the clouds lately. With spring finally showing up and summer fast approaching, the skies have been really beautiful! I have been able to do some plein air painting outside, which has given birth to a whole new series of acrylics. Also, people have been out and about and buying. I had four sales of my jewelry, and am currently making new pieces. It has been very therapeutic to create because the rest of life is chaotic. The end of school, my health, my husband's job search, summertime for the kiddos, and preparing the house has me exhausted. Art has been a constant for the last few years. So, gazing up into the clouds is good for my business and my soul. If you can today, I encourage you to take some time and look up.

From the Studio

As promised, here are a few pictures I have done of my newer assemblages. As I work I found I am liking them more and more. Right now I am focusing on small pieces until I find my groove. This also helps with the learning curve: new materials, finishes, epoxy, etc. Eventually I want to do some large scale more permanent pieces. Oh, and am painting landscapes as well at the moment.

New Venue

I am pleased to announce that Skysailing Art Jewelry is now being sold at Little Shoppes on High. It is a great eclectic store with one of a kind of items. It fills the space left lonely when Queen Bees closed. I am very excited to be working with the owner and other artisans there. Also, I am currently talking with the planner of an art happening in Norfolk....depending on my schedule, I am hoping to do live painting or sketching. We will have to see but moving forward in the right direction.

Assemblage or Lesson in Life?

Today I am working on a mixed-media assemblage that I started four months ago. It is not finished but I figured I would write a post as the paint dries. It has been very interesting to me as I explore where my natural talent falls...and through it, see the prejudice that exist in the art world. For instance, there is the famous artist Joseph Cornell who first put assemblage boxes on the map. Recently one of his pieces sold for over half a million. However, I cannot tell you the number of times a well-meaning(or sometimes the opposite) artist suggested I not work so much in mixed media. That galleries frown upon it because it is not 'original art'. This is not the case and is really a rather outdated way of thinking. The flip side is many up-and-comers are doing large amounts of mixed media and assemblage. The market is being flooded with it now. Also, there seems to be this need to make it shocking for it to be considered art by the 30 and younger crowd. So, my more subtle pieces are not always accepted by the happening attending hipster. What have I learned from all this? Well, that I don't really care. Maybe that is not the right way to put it. I'm not thumbing my nose at the establishment....okay, actually I am. Seriously, I really have been sticking to my motto of "JUST MAKE GOOD ART".

And I am making it with people I like and trust. I recently ended a business relationship. It was not ugly or uncivil (I don't even know if the acquaintance is aware). However, I had social networking connection with the owner of a certain store because I was in a show there. Since doing the exhibit, I have learned what kind of person the owner is by simply following their Facebook. They are, in my opinion, not focused on art but churning out hastily poor crafted items for a profit - and do so by taking away from the artisans' earnings. I feel they lack integrity, and I don't want to work with someone like that. So, I don't. It can be a little scary because I know that I may miss opportunities. I have already had this happen with my writing for similar reasons. However, I have to look at myself in the mirror. At the end of the day, I want to be pleased with what I created and how I got through that process. In a sense I am my own assemblage.

And if you are interested, got to josephcornellbox.com to see some really incredible work!

On the Rebound...

Sorry for the delay but I have a good excuse. No really, I do. I was in the hospital for an emergency procedure. I suffered a Mallory-Weiss Tear to my esophagus that required a trip to the emergency room and a few nights stay. I am happy to report that I am doing much better 3 weeks post-op. I also am happy to say that I picked up my paints and sketch pad this week too. Another big announcement is I will be in the Oceanfront Arts Festival this year in Virginia Beach. I am very excited with lots to do and prepare. Also, I am going to join an artist's league, another first for me. Now to pick up some sales, and I will be rolling. I will be posting the new pics this week when I finish. I am very much in an orange mood today...
